Transponder keys in Richmond Hill

A modern car key has a chip the engine has to recognize. We cut, clone, and program transponder keys at your vehicle.

A transponder key is a regular metal blade with a small chip embedded in the plastic head. When you turn it in the ignition, the car's computer reads the chip; if it doesn't see a chip it trusts, the engine won't start. That's why a hardware-store copy of a transponder key turns the lock but doesn't fire up the car.

Cloning vs programming

There are two ways to make a working transponder key, and they're not the same thing:

  • Cloning — we copy the data off your existing chip onto a blank chip. The car already trusts the data, so no programming is needed at the vehicle. Faster and cheaper, but only works when you have a known-good original.
  • Programming — we add a brand-new chip to the car's onboard memory. This is required when no working key exists, when you want the previous key disabled, or when the original is too damaged to clone.

We do both. Tell us your situation on the phone and we'll bring the right equipment.

When you need transponder service

  • You want a backup key and your current key has a chip.
  • You lost a key and want the missing one disabled.
  • You replaced an ignition cylinder and need fresh keys paired to it.
  • You bought a used car and the previous owner only handed over one key.
  • You're getting a "key not recognized" message after a battery disconnect.

What we'll need from you

  • Year, make, and model.
  • VIN (helps us pre-stage the right blank).
  • Photo ID matching ownership.
  • Any working key, even a damaged one.

What this isn't

Some newer vehicles — especially push-to-start models and certain European cars — moved past traditional transponder keys to encrypted smart fobs. If that's what you have, you're really looking for key fob programming instead. Call with the year and model and we'll point you to the right service.

Common questions

FAQs

Why doesn't my hardware-store copy start the car?

Because that copy is only the metal blade. It will turn the lock but the chip-less head can not authenticate with the immobilizer. You need a transponder copy, which is what we do.

How long does it take?

A clone is often 15–30 minutes. A from-scratch programming runs 30–90 minutes depending on the vehicle.

Can I clone a damaged chip?

Sometimes. If the chip still reads, yes. If it does not read, we have to program a new key from scratch.

Will this disable my old key?

Only if you ask us to do a full reprogramming. A simple clone leaves the old key working.
